Philip Johnson: The Architect in His Own Words
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (December, 1994)
Authors: Philip Johnson, Hilary Lewis, and John T. O'Connor
Average review score:

Philip Johnson as an architect and explorer
The time of the architecture in the last century is a live time for the "architecture eminence" Philip Johnson. In his book you get closer look of his changing architecture from introducing the International Style to America in the early thirties to Post-Modernisms. A great book about a great man.

Good Book
Shows his view over the architecture and over his own work. Very well ilustraded.

Physical Culture
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (26 April, 1990)
Author: Hillary Johnson
Average review score:

Deserves recognition
Lovely prose, intriguing story--this book deserves a wider audience. Sample passage:
"But I am not what I seem. I am like the species of Amazon flower that has learned to bloom in the shape of a female dragonfly. The male insect doesn't know the difference, or pretends not to know, spending his passion without inuring to defeat. All my life I have believed myself an imposter, laboring the bring the shameful seed of deception to term--only to find that camoflague is the latest gene in all possible couplings."

Amazing but very difficult novel
An extraordinarily tense, strange novel about the extremes of hiding, both psychological and physical. Its strengths are the minimalist prose and imagery as well as its ability to portray the extremes of one person's pain.

Quilter's Review of Pink Lemonade and Other Delights
I love this book! The directions are easy to understand and the sewing directions are easy to pickup. Would purchase other books by this author. The instructions are easy enough for a beginner to understand or for the more advanced quilter. Hurry and get this one, it's a keeper!

Pink Lemonade
I have recently purchased this book and have not had a chance to make any of the quilts. I have looked through it many times and enjoy all of the colorful pictues and quilt inspiration. I can't wait to get the time to make something from it.

Plant A Geranium In Your Cranium

Author: Barbara Johnson
Average review score:

Must have book
This is a wonderful "pick me up" book. Barbara Johnson focuses on the problems of life but also gives you solutions for them. She makes the biggest problems have a silver lining. This is a must have book.

Don't Run Out of Gas in the busy intersection of life
Barbara Johnson continues to share her life with us. Despite major family crises through the years, or maybe because of them, she has learned how to face serious life events with humor and faith. If you haven't read Barbara before, you can start with this book. It isn't a theologic treatment, but when you are in the midst of either tradgey or life, this book contains the gas to keep you going in the right direction.

Plant Kingdoms: The Photographs of Charles Jones
Published in Hardcover by Stewart, Tabori & Chang (December, 1999)
Authors: Sean Sexton, Robert Flynn Johnson, Alice Waters, and Charles Jones
Average review score:

A Hypnotically Beautiful Book!
All photographs are reproduced in a warm duotone, which brings out the amazing range of light and shadow in the original works. A learned introduction by Robert Flynn Johnson puts Jones in the context of other close-up still-life photographers. The book's only defect is Alice Waters's inane, hippy-dippy Preface: "A bunch of radishes. A bunch of grapes. [. . .] Charles Jones reminds us that horticulture is sacred. There is no other word for it." She drivels off after two pages, but still, that's two fewer of Jones's photographs that we might have enjoyed.

Perfect still-lifes
A marvellous and inspiring book, whether you're a gardener or a photographer, or both. Jones' work, found in a trunk in the Bermondesy Market, is quite the most remarkable body of still-life work produced by an English photographer. Reminiscent of the photos of Josef Sudek, Irving Penn or Karl Blossfeldt, it's everything good still-life work should be -- simple, dramatic, evocative and perfectly composed. Since Jones left no negatives -- later in life, he used his glass plates to make cloches to protect his seedlings -- this book is the only public record of his work you're likely to see unless you chance upon an exhibition organized by the author, dealer and collector Sean Sexton. I can't recommend this book enough.

Play Ball
Published in Hardcover by J Countryman Books (01 May, 2001)
Authors: Dave Dravecky, Mike Yorkey, and Randy Johnson
Average review score:

Give this book to anyone who likes baseball!
My 7 year old son spotted this book in the Christian book store two weeks ago and we bought it. He played Pee Wee baseball last spring and loves the sport. My wife and I have read a chapter with him at bedtime each night and I finished the book Saturday morning on my own.

The anecdotes are funny; the insights are touching and deeply meaningful, and we all have enjoyed this book.

I plan to buy several copies and give them to neighborhood parents of children who play baseball.

Do you know a baseball player?
Last night, I picked up this book to send to my son. He is a minor league player and recently had "Tommy John" surgery to his pitching elbow. I have read Dave Dravecky before but this time I was "hooked" on the first page! What a wonderful book for that baseball player in my life --- and me! Thank you, Dave, for sharing your love of the game but most importantly, your love for Jesus Christ. It was clear that when we are out there on the mound, all the pressure is on --- Jesus is with us in each inning! Even into "extra innings"! Absolutely buy this for that baseball player or baseball lover in your life!

PowerBranding(tm): Building Technology Brands for Competitive Advantage
Published in Paperback by ProBrand (February, 1997)
Authors: Marty Brandt and Grant Johnson
Average review score:

THE High Tech Branding Primer
This book has been an invaluable resource for me in my role as Director of Corporate Communications for a publicly-held, high tech electronics company. Image equals dollars, and "PowerBranding" shows high tech companies the steps required to build and leverage all their brands. The importance of the high tech corporate brand and marketing the company as the # 1 product are often overlooked, and yet are required to support product brands, marketing and sales, and even stock price. It is a MUST read for anyone/everyone involved in high tech branding, including senior executives, as well as PR, MarCom, and investor relations professionals.

I'd make every client read it if I could.
As a Sr. Brand Planner for an advertising agency, I have reccomended this book to other planners and clients as simply the best synopsis of Branding I have come across -and only one of the clients was technology-based.

Prayers To Move Your Mountains powerful Prayers For The Spirit-filled Life
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (13 June, 2000)
Authors: David Johnson, Michael A. Klassen, and Thomas M. Freiling
Average review score:

Inspiring
I found this book very helpful in deepening my prayer time with God. The prayers can also be used as devotionals as they reference specific scriptures throughout. A variety of topics are covered including prayers for worshiping God, dealing with sin, sickness and disease, relationships, and praying to bring in the Kingdom of God. I was challenged by this book to pursue God in a deeper way and inspired by His greatness.

Best Prayers for Private/Public Use for Bible Christians
As an evangelical pastor who collects prayer books for use in personal devotions and for use from the pulpit, I have found "Prayers to Move Mountains" to be the best I have seen thus far.

The prayers are written simply, in plain English, but are nonetheless beautiful. They have substance, are anchored to Scripture, and though written for personal prayer times, are easily adapted for groups. The prayers are pretty much mainstream evangelical/fundamental with a slight charismatic twist in a few of them, and the few prayers which may reflect a variation from the readers point of view may be easily adjusted. I am a non-charismatic and only feel I need to slightly adjust a handful of the prayers.

The book contains 108 practical and reverential prayers divided into 11 categories, each prayer about 2 short pages long. The categories are: Worshiping God for Who He is, Thanking God for What He Has Done, Becoming More Like Jesus, Sin, Stress, Marriage and Family, The Lives of Your Children, Relationships, Job and Career, Sickness and Disease, and Bringing in the Kingdom of God.

If you are a Bible-oriented Christian, you will appreciate this prayer book. Go for it.

Great Way to Introduce Children to Spanish.
This uniquely illustrated children's picture book, ages 4-10, includes a Spanish/English vocabulary list with a scattering of Spanish words printed in red throughout the story. A popular subject in the media of late: when best to introduce children to new languages? Recent studies have proven that young kids are more receptive to the fun of learning new languages and, as a result, appreciate other cultures. They make new friends.

This book tells of a special friendship between a small dog named Princesa and her kitten friend, Friskie. Here, Princesa risks her own life to save Friskie.

The Princess and the Painter
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (October, 1994)
Author: Jane Johnson
Average review score:

Fabulous illustrations!
This story is based the on the painting "Las Meninas" by artist Diego Velazquez. The story tells a "what might have been" story about the characters shown in the painting, specifically the young Infanta Margarita and her friendship with the artist. The story is short, simple, but very charming.

All that said, the illustrations make this book! I am an acknowledged sucker for beautifully illustrated children's books, and this one definitely delivers. A charming story becomes truly captivating through the beautiful paintings!

A great book for introducing girls to masterpiece painting
Despite what the reviewer says, the book has great depth to which our 4-5 year old daughter relates well. Getting dressed and washed makes the princess feel "hot and cross." She dumps a "huge mound of sugar" on top of her breakfast. She tries to act grownup at a banquet and hopes her important parents will notice her. The illustrations are marvelous and richly show off historical elements of the time. Our family hopes that Johnson will do another book in a similar vein. We would order a copy as a birthday present for every girl that would like to be a princess.
